Plants for an Australian Garden


It is very essential to select plants that suit the atmosphere and environment of your garden if you want to have a beautiful garden. Perfumes, texture, colors and shapes are added to your garden by plants. You should research that what plant is best for the environment you live in, how big the plants will grow, how much light plants need, what is the wind and heat tolerance level of the plants, etc.

Internet is a very good source to do research about plants. There is a treasure of information about plants with photographs. You can select perfect plants for your garden by knowing the details about a plant. However, when you visit a nursery, do check the labels on the plants for info about which area and atmosphere is best for that plant.

There are many plants available in Australia, some are native and some are not. Some of the best plants available for an Australian garden are as follows:

Native Fuchsias: It is best for small gardens. Scientific name of Native Fuchsias is Correas. There are several varieties of Fuchsias available such as Redex. Planting Redex in your garden will attract birds. Fuchsias are best for soil that has plenty of drainage and intermittent sunlight. Spring is best time to fertilize Fuchsias.

Mount Morgan Wattle: It is a flower that multiplies very quickly. You have to trim it before the seedpod gets in shape. When Mount Morgan Wattle blooms, you will have a beautiful garden filled with bright yellow flowers.

Banksia: “Giant Candles” is the nickname given to this plant. It has a striking and lovely color. A soil with good drainage is best for this plant. Durability of this plant will endure in harsh conditions. 

Grevillea: Grevillea traits a variety of hybrids and species. You’ll get various choices when you choose to plant Grevillea in your garden. If you trim the plant in spring it will continue to bloom. Grevillea is a native Australian plant. It ranges from 0.5 meters high bushes to 35 meters tall trees.

Jasmine: Madagascar Jasmine or Stephanotis Floribunda Jasmine is best for the North Australia. If you want to plant Madagascar Jasmine in southern parts of Australia, always plant it along a fence or wall which is exposed to sun. Planting Jasmine in your garden will fill your garden and home with perfume.

Lavender:  Lavender grows best in the cool areas of Australia. It comes with 25 species and normally grows to 1 meter in height. Lavender emits a sweet lovely fragrance.

Roses:  A garden is incomplete without a rose. Blue Moon, Graham Thomas and Double Delight are some of the hundreds of rose varieties. It is low maintenance, hardy and produces very sweet smell. Little pruning gives it a stunning look. It is a one of the top choices for an Australian garden.

Frangipani, Boronia Megastigma, Gardenias, etc are some other fragrant flowers best for Australian garden. If you have a water feature or pond in your garden than Water lily, Monochoria (Lilac Lady), Yellow Waterwort, etc are best for you.
